no sex please, we're teenagers & Guernsey
Thanks to Kathryn for a good synopsis of this programme which was on BBC2. I really enjoyed watching it for the most part. It was really encouraging to see some sensible down to earth Christian youth work which didn't lean too heavily one way or the other theologically. Clearly the Abstinence thing is pretty Evangelical, but I loved the way that the two youth workers involved focussed on it purely in terms of it's positives; 'life can genuinely be better without sex' rather than the usual; 'looking what damage you're doing, you're going to hell' approach! The American Pastor however was another matter altogether, what an arse! A complete control freak! I was stunned to see him leading the service, playing the guitar, leading the singing, preaching, leading the response, and doing the small group, and not listening to anything that any young person said in all that time. It was a stunning example of really crap youth work, and so manipulative I was nearly falling out of bed!! I did however wet myself when one of the members of his youth group 'Oh my gosh I can't believe you are soooo disrespectful of Pastor Steve (or whatever)' ended up copping off with one of the English lads, made me larf!! I'm looking forward to seeing how the programme develops, and I suspect there'll be plenty of blog chat about it...
Off to Guernsey tomorrow, should be really good fun, not that my feet will touch the ground - hope and pray that we'll live up to some pretty high expectations! Will try to blog from the hotel...
